On 14 January 2022, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Glavnova V. N. held an information-entertaining event on “Magic Old New Year” for the students of Bolgar comprehensive school №1.
On the night of 14 January, Russia and some other countries of the world celebrate Old New Year – unofficial but people’s favorite holiday.
The tradition to mark Old New Year is connected to the difference between two calendars – the Julian calendar (old style) and the Gregorian calendar (new style). This discrepancy in XX-XXI centuries is 13 days that is why New Year in the old style is celebrated on the night of January 13-14.
During the event, schoolchildren learned about the history of emergence of the holiday, watched a video “The Old New Year celebration” and knew what countries also mark this holiday. Kids became acquainted with omens connected with the holiday, chose dumplings with surprises, played in the snow and participated in the relay “This Old New Year”.
