On 11 September 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Salimova G. I. held an event on “The towns of Volga Bulgaria”.
The most important criteria of the degree of development of Volga Bulgaria was the rise of urban culture. Bulgars used their experience of city making in Azov region, Ciscaucasia and the Lower Volga, applied architectural techniques of builders from Central Asia, Iran, Arab countries and North-East Rus.
A highly developed center and long-time capital of Bulgars’ state was the town of Bilyar. Ancient Bilyarsk town is the largest among Bulgar settlements with an area of about 800 hectares. Bilyar had not only vast territory but also a massive fortification system. It had two lines of defenses, which protected the outer and inner town.
Suvar was also a large town of Volga Bulgaria, which appeared in IX century in the upper part of the left tributary of Volga – the Utka River (near the village of Kuznechiha in Spassky district). Suvar had massive fortress walls, earth walls and ditches. In the center of the town, there was a brick palace lined with green and blue tiles. The palace was supposedly built with the help of masters from Khorezm.
At the event, the audience knew that Bulgars were active in city-building activity. The guests became acquainted with the history of the most significant towns of Volga Bulgaria, which were the centers of crafts and trade.
