On 9 July 2020, a methodist of the museum and educational department of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sagirova L. Sh. held a museum lesson on “Tatar headwear: kalfak and tyubeteyka” in the Memorial Sign in honor of adoption of Islam by Volga Bulgars in 922.
Tyubeteyka is an ancient national men’s headgear, which has a great importance in Islam. The word “tyubeteyka” comes from the Turkic “tyube” – a top. This headpiece is a decoration and an essential part of men’s religious clothing.
Kalfak is an ancient women’s headwear, an integral part of Tatar national costume. Earlier different wishes, talismans, prayers were often depicted on kalfaks what gave to this headgear some magical coloration.
During this museum lesson, the audience found out what these headpieces meant. Tyubeteyka was used to identify a social status of its owner. For example, patterns of tyubeteyka embroidered in gold meant that its owner was from an aristocratic background. The guests listened to quatrains about these Tatar headpieces.
