On 20 February 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Bitunova Y. A. held an interactive event on “Defenders of our Homeland” for the students of the 3rd and 4th grades of Bolgar Comprehensive School №1. This activity was devoted to Russian holiday celebrated on 23 February every year – the Defender of the Fatherland Day.
In early 1918, German troops started an offensive throughout the front of Soviet Russia benefiting from a difficult situation of the country. A real threat arose for the Russian capital – Petrograd. A new army was formed – the Red Army, which stopped the aggressor. 0n 23 February 1918, a large-scale formation of Red Army troops and units began. This day was announced as a holiday – the Red Army Day. In 1946, the Red Army was renamed the Soviet Army and the holiday also was called the Soviet Army and Navy Day. On 10 February 1995, the State Duma of Russia adopted the Federal Law “About the Days of Military Honor of Russia”, and this day got the name of “the Defender of the Fatherland Day”. Today, as in the old days, our army is famous for its warriors. The younger generation is brought up on the example of these people. The army of our country has the glorious past and, we hope, a decent future.
At the event, the students received an information about the history of the holiday and saw a presentation. After that, the kids with a great interest participated in an intellectual quiz. At the end, the children made beautiful holiday cards.
