Products of glazed ceramics

The flourish of glazed products manufacturing in the Volga Bulgaria dates back to the late 12 – early 13 centuries. The local products of glazed ceramics were made of good quality clay (it was well milled, was mixed thoroughly, and contained some amount of sand) on heavy throwing wheel. Glaze smoothly covers the surface of the products with a thin layer thickening to the bottom.

This way of covering is characteristic to pouring and dipping a vessel to glaze. The tone of Bolgar products of glazed ceramics is various in shades with gradation of the same colour. For example, they are of green, light green, dark green, brown, yellow-brown, brown-black, blue, blue-purple colours. There are dishes with one (outer) and two (inner and outer) sides glazed. Large handicraft workshops were the only ones to manufacture products of glazed ceramics, and it was done exclusively on request.
