Bone products
Bulgarian craftsmen processed their domestic animals’ bones. There is a wide range of bone made artifacts in the archaeological collections of the Bolgar State Museum-Reserve. This collection was acquired due to numerous archaeological excavations held in the Bolgar Historical ad Archaeological Complex as well as in its outskirts.
Collection of bone cutting materials includes work tools and household items (sewing needles, acidic, piercings, etc.), items of military and hunting equipment (arrowheads, spring buckle, whip handle, etc.), toilet ware and jewelry (combs, ear picks, buttons, beads, etc.), game facilities (dices, chess, etc.), cult objects (amulets). Many bone products are decorated with linear and circular ornaments in all kinds of combinations and cuttings.
Sometimes bone products, especially buttons, were painted in different colours with the aim of increasing their aesthetic quality. Unknown craftsmen used round, rectangular, volumetric or flat items skillfully to form different patterns of lines, cuttings and circles. Initially, the Bulgarians manufactured bone products with the help of a knife, and later began using a special iron hacksaw, a cutter and a drill.
Potter’s craft was one of the widely spread ones among the Bulgarians. Various pots and jars, cup-shaped vessels and boilers, dishes and cups were manufactured in numerous potteries. Predominantly, Bulgarian tableware was of yellow-red colour and was widely spread in neighboring countries and other nations thanks to the state’s developed trading activity. Potters start manufacturing products of glazed ceramics by 13th century.
