On August 14, an employee of the museum and educational activities department D.P. Hramov held an informational and educational event “Secrets of the Bulgar healers” for the guests of the Bolgar Museum‑Reserve.
The ancient Bulgars developed traditional medicine over the centuries. Thanks to numerous Eastern manuscript sources, they were familiar with the excellent examples of medicine from Ancient Greece — the works of Hippocrates and Galen — and had knowledge derived from the great works of Abu Ali ibn Sina (Avicenna), Abu Rayhan al‑Biruni, Abubekr Muhammad ibn Zakariya al‑Razi, and other outstanding medical scholars. Medical practice was carried out by specially trained people — tabibs with in‑depth knowledge of medical science, who knew the qualities of medicinal herbs and the methods of producing medicines.
The participants of the event got acquainted with the exhibition of the “Healer’s House” museum and learned that medicine in Volga Bulgaria in the 10th–11th centuries gradually evolved from folk medicine to scientific medicine, and the oldest books by Bulgar scholars‑physicians have survived to this day. They have scientific, historical and practical significance and make it possible to preserve the continuity in the study of medicine.
Twelve people attended the event.
