On April 24, an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Yu. A. Bitunova gave a lecture “The history of medicine in Volga Bulgaria” to 5th grade students from Tolyatti.
After visiting the museum “Healer’s House”, the students learned a lot of new and interesting information about the history of medicine among the ethnic groups that previously inhabited the territory of present-day Tatarstan. The medical knowledge of Volga Bulgaria was based on the traditions of folk medicine (the healing properties of honey, birch brooms, castoreum, and belemnites were emphasized). The children were particularly interested in the story of the Bulgar physician Tajaddin ibn-Yunus al-Bulgari whose works were very popular. The students listened attentively to the lecture and examined the medical instruments and books on medicine on display.
Eleven people attended the event.
