On March 18, an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve D.P. Hramov delivered a lecture “Abolition of serfdom in Russia” to 23 students of the 6th grade of Bolgar secondary school No. 1.
Listeners of the lecture learned that March 3 (February 19, old style) is a special memorable date in the calendar – the abolition of serfdom in Russia. The students learned about the reasons for the need to abolish serfdom, and about the creation of a secret committee on peasant affairs. The main outcome of the committee’s work was an open discussion of the draft abolition of serfdom. The Committee was abolished on February 19, 1861 due to the completion of its mission and the implementation of peasant reform. After the adoption of the reform, the peasants received new rights and freedoms.
The students learned how the reform took place in the country and about its results. The results of the reform were both positive and negative. The topic of peasant unrest was also touched upon. The most famous uprisings were in the village of Bezdna, Kazan province (Spassky district) and in the villages of Kandiyevka and Chernogai, Penza province.
