On January 14, a methodologist of the excursion management department of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Glavnova V.N. held an information and entertainment event “Meeting the Old New Year” for 19 schoolchildren at Bolgar boarding school for children with disabilities.
The Old New Year is a rare historical phenomenon, an additional holiday that resulted from a change in the chronology. Due to this discrepancy in calendars, we celebrate two New Years – the old and the new style.
At the event, the children watched the video “Old New Year”, learned that this holiday has another name – “St. Basil’s Day”, which in the Old Russian calendar was dedicated to St. Basil the Great, as well as about the customs and traditions associated with this holiday. The children read poetry, solved riddles, participated in outdoor games, a comic auction and a “sowing” ceremony – they scattered wheat grains for a rich future harvest. The most active participants received New Year’s prizes.
