The Bolgar State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve was established under the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Tatarstan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (TASSR) from 14.04.1969. No. 222 ‘On the Establishment of the State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve in the TASSR on the basis of the Bolgar Settlement’.

 The Bolgar State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve is a state institution subordinate to the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan.

 The protection zone of the Bolgar Historical and Archaeological Complex is set within the Bolgar archaeological site and also covers 50 meters buffer zone outside of the Medieval rampart, including Small Town and Hellenic Chamber ruins.

 In 2014, the land-use regimes for the complex were approved by the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan No. 429 ‘On the Approval of the Boundaries and Land-Use Regimes for Bolgar Archaeological Site Cultural Heritage Property of Federal Significance’.

 In 1998, the Bolgar Historical and Archaeological Complex was included into the Russian tentative List.
 In 2014, the Bolgar Historical and Archaeological Complex was inscribed to the World Heritage List.
