On November 22, 2024, an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sabirova L.A. for 12 pupils of Bolgar boarding school held an interactive museum class “Medieval games”.
Volga Bulgars paid great attention to the education of children, and board games were often an integral part of this process. They developed logical thinking, attention and imaginative thinking.
The event took place in the museum “The Healer’s House” where an informative excursion was conducted for the students. Then kids became acquainted with the history of the most popular games among the Volga Bulgars – “Alquerque” and “Mill”. Alquerque (Arabic for “fortress”) is a checker-type board game widespread in the middle ages. In Alquerque, the main features of a checkers are already clearly visible: it is a battle of equal squads of 12 chips each where the capture is carried out by jumping – and it is mandatory. Not without reason this beautiful game with simple rules has spread throughout Africa and Asia. Mill is a logical board game for two players. The aim of the game is to remove all the chips of the opponent.
The children not only learned about the history and rules of these games, but also actively played and got a lot of positivity. At the end of the event, all the students received memorable gifts from the museum-reserve.
