On 23 September 2024, an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Hramova G.K. for 16 tourists from Belgorod held an information and cognitive event ‘Bolgar is the city of masters’.
In the economy of Volga Bulgaria of X-early XIII centuries, extremely important role was played by urban crafts. Its production went not only to the domestic market, but also exported to other countries. The leading branches of crafts were ferrous metallurgy and metalworking. Non-ferrous metallurgy also developed successfully. Bulgar bronze founders and coppersmiths produced mainly various crockery – jugs, bowls, dishes, kumgans, lamps, basins and trays, as well as bowls from scales, weights, etc. The jewelry craft of the Bulgars was distinguished by perfection. Bulgar jewelers knew the most complicated methods of processing precious metals. Pottery was one of the main industries of Volga Bulgaria. Bulgar potters made such perfect vessels that they were in demand in the vast territories of Eastern Europe. These masters stood incomparably above their neighbors in terms of professionalism. Under the influence of pottery, completely new branches of artisanship were born: the production of building bricks used in the construction of residential and public buildings, and glassmaking. Traditional crafts such as bone-cutting and leatherwork reached a high level of development. In many Western and Eastern countries, a special type of finely worked leather called ‘bulgari’ was highly valued. Only Bulgar masters knew the secret of its manufacture.
On the example of archaeological artefacts, the participants of the event became acquainted with the development of crafts in Volga Bulgaria and the life of the ancient city of Bolgar in the period from X to XV centuries.
