Every year on 15 September, one of the largest environmental holidays – Russian Forest Day – is marked in the Russian Federation. In 2024, it falls on Sunday. The holiday was born at the end of XIX century. In 1894, on the initiative of the forester Mitrofan Tursky, the management of public schools in the South-West region issued a circular ‘On planting trees by pupils of public schools on the land belonging to the schools’, which proposed to plant green areas by schoolchildren. At the same time the first mass tree planting campaigns started.
Traditionally, on the Russian Day of Forests various nature protection actions are organized. Volunteers, activists and ordinary people plant trees, go out on clean-up days, clean litter from glades and shores of forest reservoirs. Educational walks, quests, flash mobs, classes in libraries and in school classrooms are organized for children. High school and college students can attend lectures and seminars on forest protection and conscious consumption of resources.
Also on this day, forestry workers are congratulated – biologists, ecologists, foresters, dendrologists and other specialists who help preserve and enhance forest areas.
On 15 September 2024, a researcher of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Musina G. M. for eight pupils of kindergarten ‘Solnyshko’ held an informative environmental event on ‘Visiting the forest’ dedicated to the Russian Forest Day.
During the excursion, children became acquainted with information about the holiday, talked about careful attitude to nature. Kids learned about the importance of the forest and its inhabitants in human life, strengthened their knowledge of the rules of behavior in nature, and listened to poems and sayings about the forest. During the walk, the children participated in various games, solved riddles about trees, mushrooms, animals and birds. In the end, kids visited the labyrinth on the historical embankment and found a treasure trove of gifts to remember their exciting journey into the forest.
