On 20 July 2024, for 23 schoolchildren of the Muslim children’s camp ‘Molodezhnaya Sloboda’ an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve M.N. Rogachyova held an interactive event ‘Ancient Bolgar – an open-air museum’. The purpose was introducing children to the historical past of the Republic of Tatarstan, developing in them respect, love and careful attitude to the cultural heritage of their country.
On the left bank of the Volga River, there are ruins of an ancient city. Its former might and glory is reflected in its name – ‘Great Bolgar’. It is the pride of the Tatar people, its treasure, a cultural monument of world significance. Since 1969, the Bolgar State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve has been working here. The Bolgar Historical and Archaeological Complex is the world’s northernmost monument of medieval Muslim architecture, a unique and the only example of Bolgar-Tatar architecture of the middle of XIII-XIV centuries. It has no analogues in the world as a valuable historical monument testifying to the disappeared states (Volga Bulgaria, Golden Horde). This historical-architectural complex, enveloped in legends and connected with historical facts, is a place of attraction for tourists and pilgrimage of Tatars and Muslims all over the world. In 2014, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
During the event, schoolchildren learnt about the history of the city and its unique architectural monuments. Visiting the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization, they saw numerous archaeological finds and listened to ancient legends. The children actively participated in a historical quiz. On this day, they visited masters-craftsmen, learnt about their work, tried to work with tools used in ancient times. At the end of the event, the pupils learnt to paint souvenirs, which they took with them as a memento of Bolgar. Having made a ‘journey into the past’, the children learnt a lot of new and interesting things about the ancient city of Bolgar and got a lot of bright and unforgettable impressions.
