On 11 April 2024, an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sabirzyanova L.I. delivered a lecture on “About space and not only” for 21 students of Bolgar secondary school No. 1.
12 April is the date established to commemorate the first human space flight. On 12 April 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on the spacecraft “Vostok-1” launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome and orbited the planet Earth for the first time in the world. The flight in near-Earth space lasted almost 2 hours.
The name of Yuri Gagarin became widely known in the world, and he received the rank of Major and Hero of the Soviet Union ahead of schedule.
In April 1962, the Day of Cosmonautics was officially established in our country by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. In 1969, the International Aviation Federation appointed 12 April as the World Day of Aviation and Astronautics. Already in 2011, this day became the International Day of Human Space Flight on the initiative of the UN General Assembly.
April 12 became a great national holiday in honor of cosmonauts, designers, engineers, employees and workers who create rockets, spaceships and artificial satellites.
During the lecture, the pupils learnt about the history of the holiday, got acquainted with the history of space exploration. Children also learnt the names of famous scientists and cosmonauts who made an invaluable contribution to the development of space science. At the end of the lecture, pupils drew colorful drawings about space.
