On 21 March 2024, for 11 students of the 3rd grade of Bolgar secondary school No.1 an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Rogachyova M.N. held an informative and entertaining event on “A special day came and brought spring with it”. This event dedicated to the Day of the Vernal Equinox was held with the aim of expanding the knowledge of schoolchildren on the history of culture and traditions of the Russian people, awakening interest in folk folklore associated in the past with everyday life in Russia.
The first spring festival in Russia was the meeting of spring celebrated on different dates in March, depending on its arrival in certain parts of Russia, which was called “Larks”, “Kuliki” or “Soroki”, in honor of the forty Christian martyrs of Sebastia. On the eve of the holiday, homemakers always baked figures of “larks” from unleavened dough, and in the morning gave them to children who ran out into the street shouting short “vesnyanki”.
During the event, the pupils learnt about the history of celebration of the Vernal Equinox Day in Russia, the traditions and customs accompanying this holiday. The children learnt the meaning of such words as “equinox”, “soroki”, “vesnyanki”, “zaklichki” and joined the traditions of Russian folk folklore. They, as before in the old days, called spring – shouted “zaklichki-vesnyanki”, collected proverbs related to the day of the vernal equinox, actively guessed riddles about birds, with great interest participated in old Russian folk games. At the end of the event, the children enjoyed tasting traditional festive baked goods – “larks”.
