On 18 January 2024, for 17 pupils of the 3rd-4th grades in Bolgar secondary school № 1 an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Rogachyova M. N. held an informational and entertaining event on “Christmastide in Russia: from Christmas to Epiphany”.
Christmas is one of the most important Christian holidays and a public holiday in more than 100 countries of the world. This great holiday was established to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. On the second day after Christmas, in many countries began the most cheerful and mysterious time – Svyatki, holy days, which lasted from Christmas to Epiphany. Svyatki (Christmastide) is a time of festivities, congratulations, special rituals, fortune-telling and good deeds. In Russia, on Christmas Eve people always helped the poor and sick, gave gifts. Christmas Svyatki ended with Epiphany on 19 January.
During the event, the schoolchildren watched a colorful presentation that introduced them to the history of the holidays Christmas and Epiphany. Children learnt about Svyatki, traditions and customs accompanying these holidays in Russia. Kids read poems about Christmas, learnt what the words “svyatki”, “Christmas Eve”, “carols”, “vertep” and other words related to the holidays mean. Children participated with great interest in folk folklore – “carols”. At the end, the reciters were rewarded with a treat, and all the participants were given small paper angels, a symbol of the Christmas holiday.
