According to a decision taken last year at the 40th session of UNESCO’s General Conference, the International Day of Islamic Art is marked annually on 18 November. This celebration promotes greater understanding between people of different nationalities, beliefs and faiths, as well as their cultural rapprochement. The main purpose for which the International Day of Islamic Art was established is to make the general public aware of the past and present forms of artistic expression of Islam, and the great contribution to civilization through Islamic art.
As part of the celebration of the Day of Islamic Art, students of Bolgar Islamic Academy visited Bolgar Museum-Reserve. A researcher G. M. Musina held an event on “The role of Islamic art in the modern world” on 17 November 2023. The students toured the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization and the Museum of Quran. During the tour, much attention was paid to the objects of culture and everyday life of the Bulgarian people in different periods. The students were particularly interested in the stage of adoption of Islam by the Volga Bulgars, the development of the standard of living, culture and enlightenment of the state. Bolgar Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve is the northernmost monument of medieval Muslim architecture in the world, a unique and the only example of Bulgar-Tatar architecture of XIII-XIV centuries. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the museum-reserve includes in the description of its outstanding universal value the connection with Islamic art, design and architecture.
Twelve people attended the event.
