In the economy of Volga Bulgaria in X-early XIII centuries, an extremely important role was played by urban crafts, which stood out as an independent branch of production. Its production was not only sold on the home market, but also was exported to other countries. Various kinds of crafts were developed in Volga Bulgaria: pottery, bronze foundry, jewelry, bone carving and others.
D. O. Usmanova, an employee of Bolgar Museum-Reserve, held an event on “Bolgar is the city of craftsmen” for 23 school students from Dimitrovgrad within the project “Culture for schoolchildren” on May 23, 2023. During the event, an excursion in the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization was conducted, where the children became acquainted with the handicraft traditions of Volga Bulgaria. Kids learned the secrets of Bulgar artisans of ferrous metallurgy, coppersmith and bronze foundry, bone carvers, tanners, jewelers and potters. After visiting the museum, children went to the potter’s workshop where they saw the materials and tools of masters. The potter showed a master class and explained how ceramic items are made.
