On March 16, 2023, an employee of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sagirova L. Sh. in the museum “Town on the River” held an interactive event on “Farewell to ice” for the students of the 2nd grade of Bolgar secondary school № 1. The aim was to familiarize children with the forgotten traditions of the Tatar people, to foster respect for the customs and rituals of Tatars, to cultivate love for nature.
According to the old tradition, Tatar settlements were located on the banks of rivers. Therefore, the first holiday – the “spring feast” for Tatars is associated with ice drift. This holiday is called “Farewell to ice”.
All inhabitants, from the elderly to children, came out on the riverbank to watch the ice drift. The youth went dressed up, with accordions. Straw was put on floating ice floes and lit. Far away in the blue spring twilight, one could see these floating torches followed by songs.
This holiday symbolizes the awakening of nature – the end of winter, opening of ice on the Volga, in the basin of which Tatars have lived for centuries.
At the event, children received information about the holiday, played outdoor games, learned new Tatar words and learned how to make paper boats. At the end, kids had a test of ships on the water.
