On 22 November 2022, a staff member of the museum-educational department of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Bitunova Yu. A. held for visitors a lecture on “Peter I in Bolgar”.
The history of ancient capital of Volga Bulgaria is more than a thousand years old. During this time, princes of Ancient Russia, khans of the Golden Horde and the rulers of the Russian Empire came here. The most important thing for the preservation of Bolgar fortress was a visit by the Russian Emperor Peter the Great in May 1722. On his way to the Persian campaign, he visited and examined the ruins of structures. He was struck by the grandeur of the ancient city and its eastern architecture. Peter I ordered to collect and translate the epitaphs with Bulgar and Armenian inscriptions and to protect Bolgar ruins as a historical monument. Bolgar influenced the first decree in the history of Russia on the preservation of architectural monuments signed by Peter I on June 2, 1722.
During the lecture, the guests were informed about the visit of Emperor Peter I to the ancient town of Bolgar in 1722, and were introduced to the preserved monuments of XIII-XIV centuries on the territory of the museum-reserve.
The lecture was attended by 19 people.
