On 18 November 2022, a staff member of the department of excursions of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Usmanova D. O. held an event on “They are sacred to us – the age-old legends about you…” for the students of Bolgar boarding school for children with disabilities. The event was dedicated to the 350th anniversary of Peter I.
A representative of the Romanov dynasty, Peter was proclaimed Tsar at the age of 10 and began to rule independently in 1689. Until his death in 1696, his brother Ivan was Peter’s formal co-ruler. With an interest in science and foreign way of life since his youth, Peter was the first Russian tsar who made a long trip to the countries of Western Europe. On his return, in 1698, Peter launched large-scale reforms of the Russian state and social order. One of Peter’s main achievements was the expansion of Russia’s territories in the Baltic region after his victory in the Great Northern War, which allowed him to take the title of Russian emperor in 1721. Going to the Persian campaign in 1722, Peter visited the town of Bolgar. The white-stone structures, monuments, scattered gravestones attracted his attention. He ordered to collect the stones, put them together for preservation and translate the inscriptions on them from Arabic into Russian.
During the event, children became interested in the personality of Peter I, his reforms, foreign and domestic policy of the state. A sense of respect for the past of their homeland, a sense of patriotism was developed at the event.
