Urban crafts played a crucial role in the economy of Volga Bulgaria of X-XIII centuries. Different crafts developed rapidly in the state: pottery, iron making, bronze casting craft, jewelry business, bone carving etc. The leading branches of craft in Volga Bulgaria were ferrous metallurgy and metalworking. Products of artisans on non-ferrous metals processing were in high demand in Bulgar cities. Non-ferrous metal processing is closely tied to jewelry business of Volga Bulgars, which reached a high level of perfection. Pottery was also among the main industries of Volga Bulgaria.
On 23 May 2022, a staff member of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Usmanova D. O. held an event on “Bolgar is the town of masters” for the students of Bolgar Children’s Art school. The activity was held within the project “Culture for schoolchildren”. During the event, children had an excursion in the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization where they became familiar with artisan traditions of Volga Bulgaria. Kids learned the secrets of Bolgar masters of ferrous metallurgy, bone carvers, tanners, jewelers, potters etc. After visiting the museum, children went to the workshop of the potter where they saw materials and tools of masters. At the end of the event, schoolchildren received souvenirs.
