On 13 January 2022, the head of the museum-educational department of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Hramova G. K. held a knowledge-entertaining event on “Unusual New Year” for the students of the 3rd grade of Bolgar sanatorium-type residential school.
Old New Year appeared because of the change of the calendar in 1918. Various reforms in different spheres were carried out, and the calendar was not a matter of indifference. The old calendar was considered wrong. The inaccuracy was that average calendar year duration was determined incorrectly. Therefore, the calendar shifted to 14 days. According to this new calendar, we celebrate New Year on the night of 31 December-1 January, and in the old style – on the night of January 13-14. From here and such interesting name of the holiday – Old New Year.
At the event, children became acquainted with the holiday “Old New Year”. Winter exercise, a comic auction, active games and funny competitions were held for them.
The participants of the event remembered the main New Year’s symbols, fairytale heroes and some interesting facts from the history of New Year. At the end, everybody received an “Entertaining guidebook to Bolgar and Sviyazhsk” from Bolgar Museum-Reserve.
