On 30 November 2021, staff members of Bolgar Museum-Reserve within the project “Pushkin’s card” held an interactive event on “The unusual journey to Bolgar khanate” for the students of schools of the villages Burakovo and Kayuki of Spassky district.
At the theatrical event, kids plunged into the atmosphere of medieval Bolgar town. Khan and khanbike told about the history of Volga Bulgaria, how trade, science, education and crafts developed in this state. Ancient Bolgar always was famous for its masters. Craftsmen enjoyed great respect. They embodied in their products the history, culture, traditions and customs of peoples. The participants of the event had master classes in pottery, art painting, basketry and woodcarving. Experienced master-potter told how to prepare clay properly, to create symmetrical shapes, to dry and decorate the resulting product. Artists presented a master class in art painting of a plaster figurine. Children also learned about basic methods and receptions of basketry – one of the most ancient crafts remaining relevant to the present day. Woven products are practical and ecological. People willingly use baskets, breadboxes, vases and other household things. Woodcarving is an old folk industry. People used carving to decorate distaffs, cradles for babies, toys, platbands for windows and doors. Master told what wood and instruments he uses in his work. Kids were very interested in the process of making wooden items.
Then schoolchildren became acquainted with the peculiarities of Arabic graphics and with imitation of ancient writing implements. Each participant could write his name in Arabic using ink, a goose feather or a reed pen. At the end, kids played medieval board games “Alquerque” and “Mill”. All participants of “The unusual journey” acquired new knowledge, had plenty of emotions and good mood.
