 “Pushkin’s card”

On 15 November 2021, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Gaifutdinova O. A. within the project “Pushkin’s card” held an information-knowledge event on “Warfare of ancient Bolgar” for the students of the 7th grade of Bolgar comprehensive school №1.
The roots of Bulgars’ weapons and warfare of the pre-Mongolian period date back to the time of early Bulgars when Bulgar union of tribes with a characteristic range of weapons started to form on the Middle Volga. Further progress of Bulgar warfare was related to internal transformation of society leading to the creation of early feudal state in the beginning of X century. This contributed to the significant change in Bulgars’ set of weapons. Many types of Bulgars’ arms appeared during this period: swords, maces, certain forms of spears and axes, shields with hemispherical umbons etc. A range of Bulgars’ weapons of XII-XIII centuries characterizes the main body of troops as a heavily armed knight’s squad having diverse arsenal of weapons and equipment. It included spikes, swords, maces, scale armor, round or almond-shaped shields, helmets, stirrups and sometimes spurs.
During the event, kids knew what knightly set of arms could have been in the context of combat when the outcome of the battle was decided in a clash of heavily-armed warriors who used a ramming blow with a spear. Children learned about the existence of swords, bows, chain mails, lashes to steer a horse. They knew what knightly cavalry formed the core of Bulgar army and with its blow decided the outcome of the battle. At the end of the event, kids received memorable souvenirs.
