On 23 September 2021, a research associate of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Muhametshin I. D. held a lecture on “Mysteries of the ancient town of Spassk” for the students of the 9th grade of Bolgar comprehensive school №2. The audience became acquainted with the pages of history of our town Spassk-Kuibyshev.
The town was founded during the reign of Catherine II, on 28 September 1781. It was the center of Spassky uyezd. 1212 citizens lived in the town, according to the audit of 1858. There was Petrovsky fair – a bazaar that functioned from 29 June to 1 July on Sundays. Spassk was famous for the sale of bread and rich fish catches. Merchants from different places came there. There was a great Spassky progymnasium for women in the town that opened in 1913. In 1919, it became a pedagogical college and in 1936, a teacher-training school opened there. In 1935, the town was named Kuibyshev but it preserved its historical appearance.
In 1953, in connection with constructing a hydropower plant, the town was moved to a new place where our town of Bolgar is located now. The old place of Kuibyshev was not totally flooded, and the remains of buildings still can be seen. Now walking along the streets of a modern town you can see ancient buildings that remind us of the old town where people lived, and trade blossomed.
