On 20 July 2021, a staff member of the department “Museum Street” of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sagirova G. Yu. held a museum video lesson on “A legend about the healing of Bolgar princess”. The event took place in the most beautiful place of our museum – at Gabdrakhman’s well.
Emergence of the saint well is related to an ancient and beautiful legend. The story tells that Prophet Mohammed sent his three companions-sakhabs to Volga Bulgaria to spread Islam. The prophet gave them for the road a turban, a staff and an inkwell. They came to our land under the guise of skilled healers and began to heal the sick. Bulgar khan Aidar had a daughter Tuibike who fell seriously ill. Nobody could cure her. The ruler heard about the healers and invited them to his house. After examining the sick, they told they need a fresh birch broom and spring water for the treatment.
But it is winter. Then one of the sakhabs cleared the ground of snow and put an inkwell on that place. Another sakhab Gabdrakhman broke it with strength and stuck the staff. The third sakhab put the turban on the staff, and a miracle happened: a birch tree grew before the eyes, and spring water appeared. The khan’s daughter took a steam bath and washed with spring water. After that, she was healed. For the salvation of the daughter, Muslim tabibs asked the khan to adopt Islam. That’s what happened. Khan Aidar, his family and all people of the khanate adopted Islam. One of the sakhabs stayed in Volga Bulgaria and married Tuibike.
And in our time, a bathhouse is a good way to stay healthy. The audience had a master class in making birch brooms.
