On 3 December 2020, a staff member of the department “Museum Street” of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sagirova G. Y. held a museum video class on “My ball is rolling… A holiday of spindle”.
Tatar folk traditions admire with a sense of gratitude and respect for nature, for ancestors’ customs and for each other. Unfortunately, today for many reasons, a part of spiritual heritage and items of material folk culture has been lost. But an absolute majority of national rituals, traditional family and folk holidays survived to the present day. In Tatar villages, there is a popular tradition of helping – ome.
“My ball is rolling… A holiday of spindle” or “Orchyk omese” – we called so our today’s program (“orchyk” means “spindle”). A spindle played a role of a charm from evil and was a useful family item, which passed through the female line from mother to daughter. With its help, people cleared their house of evil spirits, healed and produced clothes.
In XIX-XX centuries, there was the veneration of spindle. After sheep shearing, women gathered in the largest house for a holiday of spindle. Wool was brought there from all over the village. Women processed it and began to spin threads using spindles. To avoid tiredness during collective monotonous work, women sang, danced and played riddles. Rural collective work gave rise to a whole folk tradition.
During the lesson, the participants clearly demonstrated on old instruments all the stages of making woolen threads. They learned to clean wool, to use spindle, to dye and roll in a ball the yarn spun with their own hands and even to knit.
