On 26 November 2020, a research associate of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Hramova G.K. held a lecture on “Traditions of Tatar tea party” for the students of the 2nd grade of Bolgar sanatorium-type residential school.
A ritual of tea party entered Tatar life so much, that Tatar people say, “A tea table is the soul of a family”, thus underlining not only their love for tea as a drink but also its importance in the table ritual. It is the characteristic feature of Tatar cuisine, without which it would be impossible to imagine any holiday – wedding, matchmaking, sabantuy or childbirth. There are legends about the hospitability of Tatar nation. For Tatar family having a guest is a good sign. A guest is an honorary, respected and dear person. By ancient Tatar custom, a holiday tablecloth was spread on the table, and the best refreshments were served – sweet chak-chak, sherbet, lime honey and, of course, fragrant tea.
In the museum “Bolgar tea party”, the kids became acquainted with the peculiarities of Tatar tea party, with life of Tatars in the Volga Region and traditions of hospitability. During the lecture, the participants saw a unique collection of samovars and items for drinking tea. Children listened with interest and looked at the museum exposition. Everybody talked lively and shared their family traditions and customs. The students received colorings with images of samovars as a souvenir.
