On 22 November 2020, a staff member of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Gumerova G. T. held an event on “Architecture and monumental painting of ancient Bolgar” for the students of Bolgar sanatorium-type residential school.
The emergence of cities and urban culture in Volga Bulgaria is closely linked to the adoption of Islam in 922. Volga Bulgaria came into quite a wide contact with Muslim world. This had an impact on the architecture of Volga Bulgaria.
Location of architectural monuments provides an overview of the territory of Volga Bulgaria. Bolgar was a large manufacturing centre. The state, the history of which goes back to X century had its own characteristics and culture. For the whole time of Volga Bulgaria existing, such towns as Bolgar, Bilyar and Suvar were particularly developed.
All archaeological and written sources indicate that Bulgars’ towns were excellent examples of quality architectural creations. Palace buildings, caravanserais, cathedral and block mosques, public bathhouses, mausoleums and other buildings were erected. Besides religious and public buildings, there was well-developed residential architecture in Bulgaria. Equipment characteristics, water supply, sewerage and underground heating show a high level of sanitation development of the monumental architecture in Volga Bulgaria.
During the event, the students knew about the existence of towns such as Bilyar and Suvar. They enjoyed answering the questions and did puzzles with the images of architectural monuments.
