On 24 October 2020, staff members of the department “Museum Street” of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sagirova G. Y. and Alekseeva T. V. held an event on “Peace and security” devoted to the United Nations International Day. The activity was held for the junior army unit of Bolgar sanatorium-type residential school.
24 October is the UN Day. This organization appeared after World War II to maintain peace in the world. The lessons of the past war made the world community unite to confront violence. On 26 June 1945, was signed the United Nations Charter, which came into force four months later. Since then, 24 October is marked as the Day of UN. This year, the United Nations celebrates the 75th anniversary of the organization’s founding.
First, it included 51 countries. Now the number of UN members has increased significantly. 193 states joined the organization in total. The principal organs of the United Nations are the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Committee and the World Court. The UN also has a number of its own specialized agencies – international intergovernmental organizations on economic, social and humanitarian issues (UNESCO, WHO, FAO, IMF, ILO, UNIDO and others). Among the major objectives of the UN, there are respect for human rights, maintaining secure life and peace on Earth, solving international conflicts and problems, ensuring cooperation between countries and harmonizing actions of different states.
The purpose of this event was to give an overview of the notion “the United Nations” and to make the youth aware of the need to combine the efforts of all nations to protect human rights.
At the end of the activity, the kids made a peace poster. On pigeons – symbols of peace – they wrote their wishes for people of our planet. “Long live universal peace in the world!” – these words are written on the monument “Peace Bell”, and we join them. The event concluded with a rendition of the song “Let the sun shine forever!”
