On 18 September 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Bitunova Y. A. held for tourists an event on “Healers of Volga Bulgaria” in the museum “Healer’s house”.
Medical knowledge in Volga Bulgaria was based on traditional medicine. Importance was given to the healing properties of honey, birch broom, castoreum, meat of different animals and birds, belemnites. There are surgical instruments (lancets, pincers) among archaeological materials.
Traditional medicine in X-XI centuries was gradually becoming professional, scientific. Medical knowledge of Bulgars reached a certain level. There were people engaged in treatment of patients, discovering solutions for ills and systematization of scientific medical knowledge.
The development of medical knowledge was influenced by writings of eastern doctors who achieved great success at the time. The leading scientist of X-the beginning of XI centuries Abu-Ali Ibn Sina was among them. The particular interest present the information about Bulgar scientists-medics whose writings were popular in the East. For example, brothers Tadzhutdin and Khasan ibn-Yunus al-Bulgari wrote a work about medical antidotes. Therefore, Bulgar medicine at that moment in history was also known in eastern countries. Based on the sources we have received, Bulgar medics wrote treatises on medicine and pharmacology.
In the museum “Healer’s house”, the guests knew many new and interesting things about the history of the development of medicine in Volga Bulgaria and became acquainted with archaeological finds presented in the exposition of the museum.
