On 9 September 2020, a research associate of the museum and educational department of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Krivosheyeva S. V. held an interactive event on “The seventh in the alphabet” for the students of the 2nd grade of Bolgar Comprehensive School №2.
At the event, children knew about the history of emergence of the letter “Ё” and some interesting facts about its origin. Everyone speaks this letter but almost no one writes it. “Ё” is the youngest letter of our alphabet. It is a native Russian letter. It reflects in writing a phenomenon, which appeared in the Russian speech. Princess Dashkova invented the letter “ё”, not Karamzin as previously believed. This letter first appeared in Karamzin’s books.
The imposition of “ё” in the early XX century did not take place for economic reasons. Stalin insisted on printing this letter in books and newspapers.
29 November is considered the birthdate of the letter “ё”. In 2005, a monument to “ё” appeared in Ulyanovsk (former Simbirsk – a homeland of Karamzin) by decision of the city council. The monument is a triangular prism made of granite on which a lower case “ё” is written.
At the end of the event, children made a craft devoted to the letter “Ё”.
