On 7 September 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Ahundov N. O. held for tourists a museum lesson on “The Battle of Borodino” dedicated to the Day of Military Honor of Russia. The purpose of this activity was to instill a sense of patriotism and historical knowledge about that great event.
The Battle of Borodino is the largest fight of Patriotic War of 1812 between the Russian army led by General of the Infantry Mikhail Kutuzov and the French army with Napoleon I Bonaparte in command. The battle took place on 7 September 1812 near the village Borodino, 125 km west of Moscow. During the 12-hour battle, the French army managed to capture positions of the Russian army in the center and on the left wing but after the cessation of hostilities, the French army went back to its original positions.
Therefore, in the Russian historiography it is believed that the Russian troops won but the following day the Russian commander M. I. Kutuzov ordered to retreat due to heavy losses and because of large reserves of Emperor Napoleon, which were in a hurry to help the French army. In the western historiography, there is widespread recognition that Napoleon won the battle, although there are some reservations.
The Battle of Borodino is considered the bloodiest in history among one-day fights.
The visitors listened attentively to the material about this commemorative day in the history of Russia – 8 September (the day of the battle of Borodino) and knew about heroism of the Russian army under the command of Kutuzov.
