On 4 September 2020, a research associate of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Muhametshin I. D. held an event on “Islam in the history of writing” in the Museum of Koran.
According to Islamic doctrine, Allah himself created Arabic writing – signs with which Koran was written for the first time (651) as Allah’s revelation. Arabic writing was even more widespread than the language. In order to avoid idolatry, Islam prohibited drawing things with souls. This is also reflected in the design of halls, mosques, rooms of palaces, minarets etc., which were decorated with florid stylized inscriptions from Koran instead of drawings. Many items – bracelets, mirrors and tableware decorated with benevolent inscriptions were widely known. They served as decorations and a sort of talismans emphasizing a status and wealth of an owner.
Islamic fine arts found expression in shamail. The central purpose of koranic signs made as shamail was to mark by itself the presence of Single Divine Essence – Allah. Therefore, Islamic art had a tremendous impact on spiritual and material culture of Bulgars and Tatars.
