On 13 March 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Ahundov N. O. held a lecture on “The towns of Volga Bulgaria” for the students of the 6th grade of Comprehensive School of the village Tri Ozera.
A medieval state Volga Bulgaria was famous for the abundance of towns: Bolgar, Suvar, Bilyar, Juketau, Alabuga, Bryahimov, Oshel and others. Khan Almush adopted Islam in the first capital – the town of Bolgar, which is the northernmost monument of medieval Muslim architecture in the world.
Bilyar was the second capital of Volga Bulgaria, “Great town” as Russian chronicles called it. Mongols destroyed this town in 1236.
Suvar was renowned for the development of crafts, trade with Iran, Khorezm, Byzantium, Rus, Georgia and the minting of coins. People were engaged in agriculture and cattle breeding. Eastern authors mentioned Suvar and Bolgar in their writings in 920s. According to Arabian geographer Abu Zaid al-Balhi, Suvar, which population reached 10 thousand, had “the main mosque”.
At the lecture, the students who have already visited our museum-reserve learned a lot of new and interesting information about ancient towns of Volga Bulgaria. They expressed interest in the subject and asked many questions.
