On 7 March 2020, a research associate of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Hramova G. K. held an information and knowledge event on “A mystery of Ancient Bolgar” for the students of the 1st grades of Bolgar Comprehensive School №2.
Ancient Bolgar was one of the leading towns of Volga Bulgaria. As a city unit, it appeared in IX-X centuries on a natural upland at the confluence of the Kama and Volga rivers. Such a convenient geographical location at the junction of the main water arteries had a great commercial and military-strategic importance. That is why Bolgar became the capital of Volga Bulgaria early in its existence.
Formation of Bulgar lands into a powerful unified state began around the town. Bolgar became a center of multifaceted interaction between the East and the West. The main buildings were wooden at that time, mostly made of pine, and there were oak fortifications around the town. Bolgar had extremely varied population because both Finno-Ugric and Turkic nations lived there. In 1236, because of the Mongol conquest, Bolgar was ruined and burnt but Mongols highly appreciated its convenient location, annexed the lands of Volga Bulgaria with their state and placed the headquarters of governors of Golden Horde here. This led to the rapid recovery of Bolgar and its flourishing. The town became again the capital of the lands left over from Bulgaria.
In a rapidly recovering town the minting of coins resumed, stone construction began and the development of jewel crafting, metallurgical craft and pottery continued. It is believed that Bolgar is the very first European city on the use of firearms and iron production. International transit routes developed. Byzantine, Armenian, Arabian visitors, guests from Novgorod and other tourists walked the streets of the town. Revived Bolgar became the economic and cultural centre of the Mid-Volga Region.
During the event, the kids got acquainted with the history of Volga Bulgaria and life of its capital in the form of interactive game. The students listened to the guide with pleasure and answered the questions of a quiz. At the end of the activity, a master-class in making postcards took place. All participants received a lot of positive impressions and bright photos.
