On 23 January 2020, in the exhibition area of the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization an exhibit “From a splinter to a lightbulb” was opened. In distant past people used artificial light sources. Fire was the first source. Since humanity discovered fire, it treated the light with awe and care. That is why a splinter, which people used as a light source in Russia was considered not only a household item but also a magic attribute. Along with the splinter, candles have been used for three centuries. When candles appeared, a variety of lighting steadily grew. The first electronic light source came into being in 1809. XX century became the time of inventions in the field of lighting. Candles and oil lamps were replaced by electric lighting.
The exhibition suggests to the audience ancient lights, lanterns and kerosene lamps from the fund of Bolgar Museum-Reserve and shows the stages of development of devices for lighting – from a cave fire to modern lighting appliances.
This exhibit is an exciting story about the light fittings of XIX-XX centuries in Russia.
