On 20 January 2020, staff members of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Rogachyova M. N. and Sabirzyanova L. I. held an information and entertainment event on “Christmastide: from Christmas to Christening” for the students of the 6th grade of Bolgar sanatorium-type residential school.
Christmas Day is one of the most important Christian holidays and a public holiday in more than 100 countries of the world. This great day is set to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, miraculously from the Virgin Mary. In Russia, next day after Christmas the most fun and mysterious time for young people began – Christmastide, holy days. There was a tradition in Russia to do good works: to help the sick, to give gifts on Christmastide. This ceremony was for everyone – from the sovereign to mere mortals. Christmastide ended with Christening or Epiphany.
During the event, children watched a colored presentation and knew about the history of the holiday, traditions and ceremonies, which accompany the celebration of Christmas and Christening in Russia. Students themselves actively told about these holidays, read poetry, some of the children sang Christmas songs, took part in folklore – Christmas carols or kolyadki. In conclusion, all participants received gifts – small angels – as symbols of Christmas Day.
