On 16 January 2020, a research associate of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Mukhametshin I. D. held a lecture “A mark of Christianity on the ancient land” for the participants of the club “The University of the Third Age” in Bolgar central library of Spassky district of RT.
The audience got acquainted with the history of interesting artefacts related to the history of our country. Christianity on the territory of our region has deep traditions and can be traced for several centuries. At the time still Khan Kubrat born in Constantinople was a friend of Emperor Heraclius. As a part of Pereshepina hoard, three gold rings with a Greek monogram “To Patricius Hobrat” decorated with a cross in the middle and eight gold Byzantium solidi were found during excavation. Besides, there was a paten – a religious vessel – in the hoard.
Mark Macedonian was the first missionary in the middle Volga region. He arrived in Bolgar in 990. Four princes came to Kiev and were christened that summer. In Volga Bulgaria Christianity was spread, and archaeological finds prove that fact. Murziha, Alekseyevskoye and other villages are prime examples of this. Sarai bishopric acted in the era of Golden Horde, and many Christians lived in towns: slaves, merchants, artisans. Russians, Mordovans, Bulgars, Mongols and many other nationalities lived together in Volga region. Christian traditions enshrined in XI-XV centuries served as a sustainable foundation for their further development in the middle Volga region.
