On 16 January 2020, a research associate of Bolgar Museum-Reserve’s educational department Krivosheyeva S. V. held an information and knowledge event “Christmas. Christmastide. Christening” for the students of the 5th grade of Bolgar sanatorium-type residential school.
At the beginning of class, children did some tasks and figured out the title of the theme themselves. There are no any round dances, songs and special dances connected with the holiday of the God’s Christening. However, as opposed to this there is plenty of ceremonies, believes and omens associated with christening. Students got acquainted with folk customs and ceremonies of our ancestors, connected with celebration of this holy day. On 18 January – on Christmas Eve and on Saint Epiphany – water blessing is held. People drill holes in the form of a cross in the ice of the nearest lake or a river. Prayer and immersing a cross three times into the water accompany this ceremony. After that the water become healing.
At the event, children developed their interest in Russian orthodox cultural roots. Students increased knowledge about traditional calendar holidays of Christmas, Christmastide and Christening, trained their memory doing different tasks.
