On July 22, 2019, S. V. Krivosheeva, researcher of the Museum-educational Department of the Bulgarian Museum-reserve, held an event on the theme “Medieval paints” in the children’s health and education center “Bolgar”.
At the lessons of painting, we often draw with watercolor and gouache, and one day the question arose before us, what was painted before, when there were no such wonderful bright colors? I wanted to try to make their own hands paint and create a picture.
At this event, the children learned that the material for the manufacture of paints people originally took from what surrounded him – it was natural pigments and other coloring substances of natural origin.
The most famous pigment – Egyptian blue, was first invented 3 thousand years BC, it became the first synthetic pigment invented by man. It is a blue glass made of sand and copper, ground into powder. Vegetable dyes were also invented in Egypt.
The Greeks invented one of the most important, as well as expensive colors – Tyrian purple, bright red paint, obtained from marine mollusks of two varieties.
From one shell could only get a couple of grams of dye. Tyrian purple was valued above gold, and therefore was considered the color of kings and emperors.
At the end of the event, the children made their own medieval paints, as well as were able to decorate their drawings with them.
Titian said that in order to become a good painter, it is enough to have only three colors: white, red and black.
