On July 14, 2019, L. I. Sabirzyanova, an employee of the Department of excursions of the Bulgarian Museum-reserve, held an information and educational event “Fortification of cities in the Volga Bulgaria”for children from the city of Kazan.
Fortification — the military science of artificial closures and barriers that enhance the location of troops during the battle and called, therefore, fortifications (from FR. fortifier — to fortify, strengthen).
Fortification construction on the territory of our region has a very ancient tradition. The history of fortification on the territory of the Middle Volga went in the General direction of development of military Affairs of Europe. The fortresses of the Volga Bulgaria, and later the Golden Horde and the Kazan khanate were examples of advanced engineering and reliably protected the inhabitants from enemy invasions.
During the event, the children learned how to build a defense of the early Bulgarians, what were the fortifications in the Volga Bulgaria in the pre-Mongol period and in the era of the Golden Horde, the traditions of stone construction in this state, as well as the interaction of fortification and tactics of warfare.
