On September 10, an employee of the excursion organization department of the Bolgar Museum‑Reserve N. R. Galimullina held an interactive and educational event “The city of Bolgar is a city of scholars” for 11 children from the 5th grade of Bolgar sanatorium boarding school. The event was devoted to the International Literacy Day.
The history of the holiday dates back to 1966 when UNESCO established it following the World Conference of Ministers of Education in Tehran. Its goal was to draw attention to the problem of illiteracy in the world. In 2026, the holiday marks its 60th anniversary; its motto is “Literacy for people, the planet, and prosperity.”
This event took place on the territory of the Bolgar Museum‑Reserve. Schoolchildren received information about the holiday and reviewed the unique history of Volga Bulgaria, which by the beginning of the 13th century had reached the highest level in its socio‑economic and political development. The participants learned about the flourishing of culture and spiritual activity, as well as the spread of writing and education. The exhibition at the museum “Healer’s House” helped the children learn about how science developed in our region. The ruins of the Khan’s Bathhouse and the Cathedral Mosque introduced them to the features of urban planning. The schoolchildren saw examples of writing on epigraphic monuments in the Northern Mausoleum. The children solved riddles, recalled proverbs and sayings related to learning and literacy, looked for errors in sentences, and, at the end of the event, assembled a Russian folk proverb about the benefits of literacy from individual fragments.
