On May 14, a researcher at the Bolgar Museum-Reserve N.O. Ahundov held an event for students from Alkeyevsk “I.F. Likhachyov’s contribution to museum work” dedicated to the 200th anniversary of I.F. Likhachyov’s birth.
Ivan Fyodorovich Likhachyov was a Vice Admiral of the Russian Navy and an art collector. He came from the Kazan branch of the Likhachyov family. He was the older brother of the archaeologist Andrey Likhachyov and contributed to the preservation of his collection and the establishment of the Kazan City Museum. He was also a researcher of the Russian Far East. He was a member of the Russian and French Geographical Societies, the International Institute of Maritime Arbitrators, the Columbia Society, and others. However, in addition to his maritime biography, he was also known for the fact that after the death of his younger brother, A.F. Likhachyov, he purchased the collection of antiquities that Andrey Fyodorovich had collected over the years from his widow and donated it to Kazan, which is considered the foundation of the city’s museum in 1894. The condition for the transfer of the artifacts to the provincial capital was an agreement not to mix them with other exhibits. However, all of A.F. Likhachyov’s donated finds eventually disappeared among other exhibits, and it is widely believed that his collection served as the foundation for the creation of the Kazan City Museum. Additionally, his brother, I.F. Likhachyov, made significant contributions to the museum industry in Kazan.
During the event, the teenagers watched a presentation about Ivan Fyodorovich, learned about his biography and his contributions to the field of historiography.
