On December 23, the head of the “Museum Street” department of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sagirova G.Y. held an interactive event “Kaz omese” (holiday of white feathers) for the students of Bolgar secondary school No. 1.
The venue for the celebration was the Museum of Abdulla Alish where a real theatrical performance took place for 12 children.
This holiday has its roots in antiquity. Since ancient times in late autumn, usually with the first frost break, residents of Tatar villages carried out collective processing of goose meat, feathers and down. Goose down was used to make pillows, blankets, and goose wings – to make brushes for greasing pastries.
The staff of the museum-reserve in Tatar costumes recreated the picture of this national holiday, which reflected the original elements of the unique action accompanied by national songs, dances and folk games. The children also learned how to stuff goose down pillows. Kaz omese is one of the many traditional Tatar holidays that must be preserved and passed on to future generations.
At the end of the program, the students were very pleased to take part in a master class on making brushes from goose feathers.
