On November 22, 2025, an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve Bitunova Yu. A. gave a lecture “Peter the Great in Bolgar” to 12 students of Bolgar sanatorium boarding school.
At a lecture held at the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization, schoolchildren listened to information about Peter I’s visit to the Bolgar hillfort. In May 1722, on his way to the Persian campaign, he visited and examined the ruins of buildings, and was shocked by the grandeur of the ancient city and its oriental architecture. He ordered the collection and translation of epitaphs with Bulgar and Armenian inscriptions, and the protection of the Bolgar ruins as a historical monument. Bolgar influenced the appearance of the first Decree in the history of Russia on the preservation of architectural monuments.
The children listened with great interest to ancient tales and legends, and learned in a playful way the names of architectural monuments preserved on the territory of the settlement.
