On October 15, an employee of the Bolgar Museum-Reserve D.P. Hramov held for visitors an information and educational event “Ethnic diversity of Volga Bulgaria”.
The participants of the event visited the Museum of Bulgarian Civilization and learned that the ethnic composition of the population of Volga Bulgaria in the early period of the existence of this state, in X–XI centuries, was quite diverse. In addition to the Bulgars, Suvars and Baranjars already known to us, the sources of the 10th century also mention the Esegels, or Eskels (iskils). Later, the population of Volga Bulgaria included separate groups of Oguz-Pechenegs and Kipchaks, as well as neighboring peoples (Burtasi, Majars, Murom, etc.). In the process of forming the state, the ethnopolitical association (union of tribes) of the Bulgars headed by ruler Almush turned out to be the strongest. In the first half of the 9th century, it created the Bulgar and Suvar Emirates (see Suvar Principality). The names of some of these major tribes are associated with the names of individual large cities.
19 people attended the event.
